Brief Profile

Avinder Chawla, Civil Engineer by profession, in public service for 28 years, a man who dons many hats is the Transportation Commissioner for the City of Irvine, Orange County, California.

He is known for assisting in the city’s focus on improving traffic management, transit planning, and traffic safety. He also enhanced community access avenues to a policy advisory body dedicated exclusively to transportation.

As a Sign Coordinator working for the California Department of Transportation( Caltrans) for 28 years, he oversees the design, maintenance, and installation of new signs on the Caltrans 250 miles plus of traveled freeways and confers with contractors regarding compliance with plans and quality of work and construction activity.

He also as Assistant Project Manager of I-5 freeway widening project,  oversaw the construction and widening of 6 miles of I-5 freeway in Orange County from 3 to 6 lanes in each direction with a budget of over 6 Billion Dollars!

Avinder Chawla is married and is the father of three girls. His wife Gurpreet Chawla worked for a pharmaceutical company for almost 12 years as Research Associate with a background in Molecular Biology and Chemistry and currently oversees her own business. His elder daughter Sharon Chawla is a graduate from USC in Health Care Administration and is working helping Covid patients, Ria and Pria( twins) are in the senior year. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, hiking, and spending time with his family.

As President, Founder of Asian Americans for Biden, he rallied to ensure to get 1.5 million-plus votes from Indian Americans for Biden\Harris campaign that resulted in the victory of Honorable Joe Biden and Honorable Kamala Harris.
He along with his three daughters helped Dave Min( Won the Election of CA State Senate) in his campaign for CA State Senate. He also actively participated in the local race in the Nov 2020 election for “Farrah Khan for Mayor” for the City of Irvine actively campaigning and fundraising( Farrah won the election by a high margin of votes).

In addition, he is continuously working to ensure equal rights for all people, while paying special attention to women and minorities. He is also looking towards promoting, supporting, and ensuring the funding of Universal Obama Health Care. With his impeccable knowledge, he is encouraging and advancing the hope and American dream of immigrants and the rights of homeless people.

He is an active participant in Community Involvement and Politics, he assisted with Asian American Rising and promoted a First AAPI Presidential Debate and forum which was attended by three Presidential candidates Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbord, Entrepreneur Andrew Wang and Billionaire Tom Steyer that brought the AAPI community and voters at the forefront of national issues on Sep 19, 2019, in Segerstrom Center of Arts, Costa Mesa, CA.

Since April 2012, he has also been a Board Member at Newport Mesa Interfaith (NMIC) Council has been representing Sikh Community. In addition,  he is a member of Orange County Advisory Sheriff Interfaith Council under Don Barnes representing the Indian American community. He sits on various Boards and commissions.
